How to file an injury report at work

If you are ever injured on the job in New York, you need to know how to file a report. Filing a report is one of the most important things you can do outside of seeking medical care. If you fail to file a report, your employer won't know about the incident or the injury you suffered. That means it will be difficult to acquire workers' compensation benefits, if you need them. Here's how you can file an injury report at work.

You should receive a medical exam and care even if the injury seems minor. After you receive medical care, you need to begin putting together a report about the injury. The report needs to be filed within days of the injury occurring so that you do not forget any of the pertinent details.

Try to collect as much evidence from the incident as possible. This will help explain what occurred and show the seriousness of the incident. The evidence might also show if a coworker was to blame for the accident. Take pictures of all the evidence to keep for your personal records.

When filing the report, you need to include the following information:

  • Your name and job title
  • Description of your job
  • Date the injury occurred
  • If you were medically evaluated and if so, where
  • The location where you suffered the injury
  • A detailed description of the incident that led to your injury

Filing an injury report with your employer is the first step in getting a workers' compensation claim moving. Make sure the report is detailed and has the correct information in it. That way, it is less likely to be questioned by the employer.
