Safety tips to protect motorcycle riders from injuries

Living in the New York area means you are no stranger to the stories regarding motorcycle accidents. A common outcome of motorcycle collisions is death. Many other riders end up with catastrophic injuries that they will never recover from.

If you plan to go riding anytime soon, be sure to review the following safety tips to help you avoid a motorcycle accident.

Wear the right clothing

Clothing can lower your risk of an injury in more than one way. First, many drivers do not see motorcyclists until they hit them. Wearing bright colors that contrast with the scenery around you helps to make you more visible to motorists. Putting reflective tape on your clothes and shoes increases visibility at night.

Your clothing plays a major role in protecting you from injury in a crash, too. Leather chaps and jacket or professional riding gear slide along the surface of the road, protecting your skin from coming in contact with the concrete or asphalt. Denim and other materials catch and shred, meaning you are more likely to roll, and you will probably lose two or more layers of skin, as well.

You should also wear a helmet with reflective features to make you more noticeable on the roads and protect yourself from a traumatic brain injury.

Be mindful of road conditions

Road conditions are always changing, and all it takes is a few seconds for a collision to occur. You should watch for changes in riding conditions, road pavement, traffic and other issues that could compromise your safety while riding.

Stay alert

In this day and age, driver distractions are everywhere. Distractions and motorcycles are a recipe for death. You should always remain aware of every motorist around you and watch out for distracted motorists and erratic driving patterns, so you can move out of harm's way when necessary.

When it comes to riding motorcycles, a little preparation goes a long way and helps prevent life-threatening injuries and death.
