El Chapo sentenced, faces allegedly unfair trial, poor conditions

If you have been following the news, then you may have heard that the so-called drug lord "El Chapo" has been sentenced to life in prison. It's believed that he will be sent to the Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado.

The man, 62, is to be sentenced to the prison, which is known to house some of the most high-risk and dangerous prisoners in the United States. He is, after all, one of the most notorious outlaws in the United States today; he ran a Mexican cartel and smuggled over $12 billion of drugs into the country.

A federal judge in New York City sentenced him to life in prison, which was mandated by law due to the extent of Guzman's criminal acts. He had been convicted of murder, money laundering and drug charges after a three-month-long trial.

On top of the life sentence, he has also been ordered to pay $12.6 billion in forfeiture. Guzman, however, still believes that he has not received a fair trial. He said that he dealt with emotional, mental and psychological torture in the federal prison in Manhattan.

Regardless of the conviction, he has complained that he was forced to drink unsanitary water and that the ventilation system was so loud he had to make his own earplugs to drown it out. The federal prosecutor made light of those complaints, stating it was ironic that he could complain about the conditions despite not showing respect to his victims. His defense attorney has long stated that the trial was nothing but a show and that the outcome has always been that he would be convicted, regardless of any other efforts.
